Technique Before Load

One of the most beautiful things about CrossFit is the competition. We all have friendly rivalries with each other in the gym, and we walk into Code 3 each day, size up the whiteboard, and think about ways to beat the marks from earlier in the day. At Code 3, we breed this competitive spirit because we know it helps drive you further than you could go alone.

But sometimes it’s important to take a step back and look at the big picture. Check out the chart above – the axes of the graph represent athletic development over time. The blue line represents the athlete who takes the time to develop proper mobility, movement patterns and technique. The red line represents the athlete who comes in and tries to move the weight by any means possible. As you can see, at a certain point, the lines intersect, and the blue line continues to rise while the red line remains stagnant.

In the heat of the moment, when the music is blaring and the intensity is high, it’s often difficult to scale a WOD or deload a barbell. As coaches, our  job is to set you up for long term success.  This means safety first, proper positioning and good body mechanics- technique before load! Holding back a little bit today will eventually allow you to flourish and reach your full potential. Remember, becoming a great CrossFitter won’t happen overnight, for some of you it will take months, and others, years. Be patient and the results will come.
